And even though I was proud of what I had accomplished as self-taught painter, I knew there were many gaps in my learning. Her work is representational and executed in oil and acrylic. Her work encompasses studio work with models and still life, and plein aire studies on location. She has taken several workshops in Laguna Beach, CA working with Ken Auster and Marc Whitney. So I was basically teaching myself post-college.īy the early 2000’s the commissioned portrait work was consistent and I no longer had to wait tables to pay the rent. She also studied with Robert Liberace and Danni Dawson from the Art League of Alexandria. They were far more interested in concepts, and less so in technique. You see, I really didn’t have all that much basic painting instruction from VCU. Since people were my favorite subjects, I sought commissioned portraits as a way to pay some bills and more importantly, improve my skills through practice. In my first 10 years out of school, I waited tables while pursuing my painting. Our model for the 4-day workshop held difficult positions remarkably well. The days seem to fly by, and the 20-minute pose sessions seemed like 2 minutes. I wanted to be a traditional painter, creating work for galleries, rather than ads for corporations. Because Oak Hollow Studios is located on a farm away from any distractions, everyone was able to focus intently on the work.
After graduating and getting some experience, however, I realized my heart wasn’t in commercial illustration. So, I studied commercial illustration at Virginia Commonwealth University because it seemed like a financially viable career choice in the arts, and got my BFA degree in 1991. He teaches a workshop in Florence yearly has well as classes at the Art League School in the Torpedo Factory in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia as well as others internationally. He has won many awards, including the Grand Prize from American Artist Magazine, 2006. I had never met anyone who actually made a living as an artist. Robert Liberace lives in suburban Washington with his wife, Lina (also an artist) and two daughters. When it came time for college, there was no question that I would study art, although what kind of art wasn’t so clear. Liberace is successful in portraying movement by using techniques reminiscent of classical works, such as contrapposto as well as pentimenti (traces of the original stroke marks).
